What is Load Range/Ply?

Load range (often called “ply rating”) describes a tire’s strength and the load it can carry at its specified inflation pressure. On LT (Light Truck) tires, you’ll see a letter such as Load Range C, D, or E on the sidewall; on P-metric passenger tires you’ll typically see SL (Standard Load) or XL (Extra Load) plus a Load Index number. Capacity depends on inflation—always follow your vehicle placard and the tire’s sidewall markings. For a deeper primer, see Tire Load & Speed Ratings, What is Load Range?, and What is Load Rating?.

Measurements

  • Find it on the sidewall: Look for “Load Range” (LT tires) or the Load Index (e.g., 112) and SL/XL on passenger tires.
  • Capacity = function of pressure: The sidewall lists both Max Load and the cold inflation pressure at which that load is achieved.
  • Match to your use: Heavier towing/hauling often requires higher load range (e.g., D or E for many trucks), but only when your vehicle and wheels are rated for the required pressure.

Note: Modern tires are not literally built with that many plies—the letters indicate a strength equivalency to older ply constructions. For full context, see Tire Ply Ratings Explained.

Clearance Checks

  • Physical size: Load range does not change the stated tire size, but higher ranges may use stiffer constructions that can slightly affect mounted section width and ride feel.
  • Wheel rating: Ensure your wheels and valve stems are rated for the tire’s required pressure and load. If you’re upsizing capacity, verify the wheel’s load/psi limits.
  • TPMS: Confirm compatibility of TPMS stems/sensors with higher pressures; see TPMS Basics.

Safety & Load Ratings

  • Follow the placard: Inflate to the vehicle manufacturer’s cold PSI unless a qualified professional specifies a towing/haul setting.
  • Don’t mix on an axle: Avoid running different load ranges or significantly different load indices across the same axle.
  • Speed & load: Observe both load index and speed rating; reference our Load & Speed Ratings guide.
